Caribou Coffee at Doug's Supermarket
A taste of the big city came to Warroad, Minnesota on Monday, August 12th with the opening of a Caribou Coffee franchise in Doug’s Supermarket. A number of hardy souls, including excited teenagers, walked through the Caribou doors at 5 a.m. in Warroad to be the first customers at this highly anticipated store opening. The new coffeehouse offers the full array of Caribou items including all of their specialty drinks and their complete lunch and breakfast menu. There are, however, a number of things that make this location stand out. First, the geographical location, being the northernmost Caribou Coffee in the United States with the closest Caribou or Starbucks locations all over a 120 miles away in Bemidji, Grand Forks or Grand Rapids. Secondly, demographically, Warroad is one of the smallest towns in the U.S. to have a Caribou franchise. Lastly, Doug’s Caribou Coffee has an actual Caribou mount hanging above the fireplace, which is a company first according to Minneapolis based corporate Caribou staff. The caribou sentinel watching over the store is on loan from Conway Marvin of Streiff Sporting Goods.
Doug’s Supermarket co-owner, Chuck Lindner, states, “We knew we wanted to remodel and putting in a Caribou Coffee just made sense to us. Everyone can appreciate really good coffee and a relaxing place to meet with friends. That isn’t a metro invention, it’s about creating a community gathering place.” His daughter Grace adds, “ I’m excited to do my homework here. We need to buy some games, though, like Uno and Scrabble. The wi-fi works good. I checked on my kindle.“
Caribou Coffee will be open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Doug’s Supermarket in Warroad. Caribou manager, Sherry Johnson commented, “We’re opening at 5 in the morning, but we’ll have to see what the customer traffic is like. In a small town we’ll know almost all our regular customers, but we also want to meet the needs of tourists as well.“ Special thermos pricing will hopefully be a lure for hunters and fisherman. Growlers of cold pressed beverages and large bags of fresh Caribou coffee beans available for purchase will help keep faithful customers well stocked at home, too.
Caribou Coffee lovers can now add a new location on to the list of places to visit: Doug’s Supermarket in Warroad, Minnesota. The teenagers that set their alarms early this morning stated, “I’m so excited, I’m not even going to go back to bed.” Clearly, they’ve already opted in on the Caribou slogan, “Life is short. Stay awake for it. “
